Analysis on Food Waste Recycling and Recovery in Suzhou City Based on Material Flow Analysis

Along with the development of urbanization, the generation of food waste in urban areas has increased rapidly in recent years. This study constructed the material flow analysis framework of the food waste recycling and recovery process by using the material flow analysis and scenario analysis method, and took Suzhou city as an example to evaluate and predict the city's food waste recycling and recovery process. The results showed that:(1) In 2013 the recycling rate of food waste in Suzhou was 45%, and the conversion efficiency of concentrated recycled food waste was 28.19% in Suzhou, the capacity of concentrated recycling, the resource technology, and the pollution control technologies for the food waste recycling and recovery needs to be improved;(2) Under the business-as-usual(BAU) scenario, the lowspeed(LS) scenario and the high-speed(HS) scenario, the recycling rate of food waste in Suzhou is expected to reach 91.67% by 2020, 4.46% and 10.37% higher than the rate under the BAU and the LP scenario respectively. The growth rate of the capacity of concentrated recycle is larger than that of the output of food waste in three scenarios;(3) Assuming that technical level remains unchanged, the output of regeneration product in HS,BAU and LS scenario in 2020 is expected to be 3.3 times, 3 times, 2.7 times to that in 2013 respectively.
