Aging, Physical Activity and Health

Immediate benefits of exercise in the elderly include arousal, improved appetite, enhanced blood glucose regulation, decreased obesity, an improved lipid profile, and relief of constipation. Functional gains include increased cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and bone strength. Overall lifespan is increased, with more substantial gains in disability-free and quality-adjusted life expectancies. Unless activity is excessive, immune function is enhanced. Regular physical activity is also helpful in the secondary and tertiary treatment of many chronic diseases. The risks (immunosuppression, injury, and sudden death) are reduced in the elderly, because they exercise less vigorously. Regular moderate physical activity is thus an important health recommendation for seniors.
