Editorial: Selection of Papers for the ECCV 2004 Special Issue

The special issue presents five extended versions of papers selected by a two-stage process from the 555 submissions to the 8th European Conference on Computer Vision that was held in Prague, Czech Republic in 2004. The conference review process accepted 41 papers for oral and 149 papers for poster presentation. The thirty best ranked orals were considered by the pair of area chairs handling the paper to clearly have significant novelty and to be of general interest and thus undoubtedly suitable for podium presentation in a single track conference. From the thirty top orals, eight were short-listed by the programme chairs. Authors of the short-listed papers were invited to submit extended versions for this special issue. None of the invitations were declined. The extended versions of the papers were reviewed by three reviewers including reviewers that evaluated the paper for ECCV 2004 as well as independent experts that saw the paper for the first time. Five papers could be accepted without or with minor revisions and these are presented in this issue of IJCV. Due to time constraints, papers where reviewers asked for “major revision” could not be included and may appear as regular IJCV papers.
