AN ACOUSTIC LINK BETWEEN BLUE WHALES IN THE EASTERN TROPICAL PACIFIC AND THE NORTHEAST PACIFIC1

ABSTRACT B lue whale calls in th e eastern N o rth P acific Ocean consist of a two-part call often termed th e A -B call. T h is call has been described for regions offshore of Oregon, W ashington, and California, U SA and th e Sea of C o rtet, M exico (review ed in Rivers 1 9 9 7 ). D ata collected from moored hydrophones in th e eastern tropical P acific (E T P ) indicate th at the A-B p attern is common in th is region as well. T here is consistency in this call type th ro u g h o u t the eastern N o rth P acific and throughout the year. T his acoustic evidence indi- cates continuity between blue w hales in th e E T P and those found west of N o rth America. T h e acoustic d ata suggest th at th e population of blue w hales generally referred to as th e OCalifornidMexicoO stock m ig h t better be termed th e Onortheast P acificO stock of blue w hales. Key w ords: blue whale, B alaen optera m u scu lu s, distribution, m igration, acous- tics.
