Controller network development - but how?!

Abstract This paper presents the general aspects and the definition of Controller Area Networks = CLNs. As an example the specific requirements of CLNs for automotive applications are given and discussed. The general features of CAN = Controller Area Network — a specific CLN developed in a joint effort by Intel Corporation and Robert Bosch GmbH are described. Discussing the features of CLNs creates a basic understanding why there is a need for specific network development tools and how their capabilities should be. Finally a set of three compatible development tools — a Network Simulator, Emulator and Analyzer — is described. They enable the network designer to define the critical network parameters: bus bandwidth, message priorities.
