This paper reports that the Commonwealth of Independent states, (the former USSR) possesses abundant reserves of coal. Coal is used in all sectors of the economy and will continue to be a major source of energy. The principal users of coal are in electric utilities and the domestic sector, accounting for more than 60% of the total coal consumption. The major coal developments for the utility industry are in the Ekibastuz and Kansk-Achinsk basins. Coal-fired minemouth power plants with design capacity of 4000 MW (eight 500 MW units) have been constructed in the Ekibastuz basin in the last decade. A 6400 MW plant (eight 800 MW units) is now being constructed in Western Siberia to burn coal from the Kansk-Achinsk basin.
