Towards efficient resource allocation in distributed systems management

With the increased availability and complexity of distributed systems comes a greater need for solutions to assist in the management of distributed system components. We address three main aspects of management: 1) the need to efficiently utilize resources in the system, 2) the need to satisfy user and management requirements, as well as the requirements on resource usage, and 3) the need for dynamic solutions, i.e., that can be reconfigured due to changes in requirements, resource availability and management policies. Despite the significant contributions made towards the development of management tools that monitor and control distributed systems, little has been done to address these points. In this paper we describe a model that captures the points above. The need for reconfiguration, our implementation and its performance are also described.
