SYNTHETIC FLIGHT TRAINING SYSTEM (SFTS) CONCEPT FORMULATION REPORT.

Abstract : The purpose of this study was to determine the technological feasibility of a Synthetic Flight Training System (SFTS) for transition and instrument flight training of Army rotary wing aviators, and to formulate a design concept for SFTS consistent with economic and military considerations and based upon the approved QMR. A survey of current training programs revealed that they produce competent aviators, but contain redundancies and utilize an unnecessarily large amount of expensive helicopter flight time, much of which can be effectively replaced by less costly SFTS time. A training concept, centered around the student and completely operationally oriented, was developed to serve as a basis for an SFTS design that will provide effective training at minimal total cost.
