A Rate-Splitting Strategy for Multi-User Millimeter-Wave Systems with Imperfect CSI

In millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications, hybrid analog/digital beamforming techniques are employed to reduce the hardware costs of the system whilst achieving near-optimal performance. However, in multi-user mmWave systems, the rate performance is affected by multi-user interference (MUI) due to imperfect channel state information (CSI). To alleviate the detrimental effects of MUI, this paper investigates how rate-splitting (RS) scheme, which is normally applied to standard MIMO systems, can be exploited for the case of multi-user mm Wave systems. Simulation results show that RS can tackle the residual MUI caused by CSI mismatch in the system and accordingly, enhances the multiplexing gain. Further, greater efficiency of RS can be obtained by using large number of transmit antennas.
