TO TBE APPLICATION OF ASDs TO LARGE PWER PLANT MOTOR SYSTEMS

In this paper the authors present a seven step systematic approach for successfully applying adjustable speed drives (ASDs) to large power plant motors. The methods described have resulted from studies made of five ASD field tests funded by EPRI from 1984 though 1989. Identification and discussion of these seven steps will help interested engineers in analyzing and designing similar installations. The EPRI-Bechtel ASD Field Test Program has tested and studied seven (ASDe) at five electric utilities that were installed on large utility power plant motors. These installations demonstrated differing versions of three separate inverter technologies and were for both pumps and fans. The ASD horsepower ranged from 2000 hp to 6300
