Challenges of Integrating Technology in an Applied Mathematics Classroom

The purpose of this research is to study the teaching experiences and challenges encountered by secondary school mathematics teachers while integrating computer technologies in Grade 9 Applied level classrooms. In this research, we are using a conceptual framework called Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) to understand, explore, and propose ways of improving mathematics education through the use of computer technologies. It is a case study about an experienced secondary mathematics teacher from a public school from the Greater Toronto Area. The major findings of this study are: learning mathematical software is essential; the teachers need to have positive attitudes in technology, and teachers need to be working in teams, with support of the administration. This presentation will suggest some changes to the TPACK model.
