Continuous reactors in free radical polymerization with branching—I theoretical aspects and preliminary considerations

Abstract Molecular weight distribution in free radical polymerization has been investigated under conditions that promote branching. Calculations were performed for one particular well-established kinetic scheme in three reactor systems: batch, segregated continuous, and micro-mixed continuous. Structural complexity and distribution breadth were found to increase rapidly with conversion in all reactor types. Distributions in the continuous systems were much broader than those obtained in batch polymerizations. Based on these calculations, conditions were selected for the continuous polymerization of vinyl acetate to demonstrate the predicted differences.
