A harmonics-free SMES system

A 15-kW SMES (superconducting magnet energy storage) system with a 12-pulse IGBT CSC (current source converter) is developed for a grid model. In this paper, the design of the converter is presented which focuses on obtaining harmonics-free currents on the AC supply. The optimal PWM strategy is applied to minimize the 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th harmonics, and the bypass LC filters are also used for reducing those high components. Computer simulation is carried out, and the results of the Fourier analysis are very good.
