REMOTE AND IN SITU SENSING FOR DIKE MONITORING: THE IJKDIJK EXPERIENCE

The IJkdijk is a test facility for dike monitoring systems in the Netherlands. It is used for proof of concept tests for new technologies for dike inspection and also for studying geophysical processes within dikes. TNO, as one of the partners in the IJkdijk foundation, uses it as a so called “field lab” for the TNO research program Intelligent Sensor Networks. A number of projects within this research program use the IJkdijk as a test case for the practical applicability of their results (visualization techniques, control rooms). For this reason the focus of this chapter is rather on practical applicability of technology than on scientific results. The chapter describes the development of the IJkdijk, the setup of the first experiment as well as the visualization of, and the interaction with the data during normal operation and in crisis situations
