A continuing challenge in the aviation industry is how to safely keep aircraft in service longer with limited maintenance budgets. Probabilistic methods provide tools to better assess the impact of uncertainties (e.g. operational loading, material properties, and environment, etc.) on component life and risk of failure. Until recently, conventional reliability analysis dealt mostly with time-invariant reliability analysis, in which statistical characteristics affecting scour remain constant with respect to time although they have probability distribution characteristics. In this study, to estimate safety of an aircraft structure with more reality, it is shown that the proposed method for time-variant reliability analysis is proposed to evaluate aircraft structure safety based on uncertain degradation mechanisms with time.
