Growth and Reproductive Performances of Doom Pigs Under Field Condition

In the present study, the performance of Doom pigs of Assam under field condition in respect to growth and reproductive traits managed under migratory scavenging system was observed. Data pertaining to 416 animals were utilized for the growth traits and 75 animals were utilized for reproductive traits. The average body weights of Doom pigs were found to be 0.62 ± 0.02, 8.52 ± 0.05 and 39.34 ± 0.31 kg at birth, weaning and adult respectively. The corresponding values in male and female pigs were 0.60 ± 0.01 and 0.65 ± 0.03; 8.29 ± 0.07 and 8.72 ± 0.08 and 38.57 ± 0.51 and 39.93 ± 0.36 kg at birth, weaning and adult respectively. Statistical analysis revealed that sex had highly significant (P<0.01) effect on weaning weight, significant (P<0.05) effect on adult weight and non significant effect on birth weight. Female pigs were significantly heavier than males at weaning and adult. The average age at first estrus, age at first fertile service, age at first farrowing, gestation length and inter farrowing period were found to be 213.91±1.36, 237.95±1.18, 351.51±1.24, 113.51±0.40 and 213.25±1.45 days respectively. The average litter size at birth, litter size at weaning, litter weight at birth and litter weight at weaning were 5.55 ± 0.11, 4.56 ± 0.09, 3.38 ± 0.06 kg and38.75 ± 0.55 kg respectively. Study of these growth and reproductive performance may be useful in selection of superior animals for development of suitable breeding programme and conservation policy for Doom pigs of Assam.
