KBSE'93 was the eighth in a series conferences sponsored by the USAF Rome Laboratory addressing issues related to knowledge-based software engineering. It was held at The Midland Hotel in Downtown Chicago on September 20 23, 1993. Conference attendance of about 115 approximated that of recent years with almost two thirds of those present being first-time attendees. International attendance was significantly lower than in the past. As in prior years, the conference was hosted in cooperation with the IEEE, ACM and AAAI and included a high quality program of tutorials, technical presentations and discussions. Conference and program chairs were Dr. Bruce Johnson and Dr. Mehdi Harandi. Three tutorials, three invited speakers, two panel sessions, twenty-one papers and numerous demonstrations were presented during the four day event. The relationship between knowledge-based software engineering and conventional software engineering and requirements elicitation were the subjects of the two panel discussions. Seven paper sessions covered the topics of synthesis, validation and verification, application, maintenance and evolution, requirements, reuse, and evaluation and experiments. Banquet attendees were entertained by a rather convincing psychic on the second day of the conference, and Andersen Consulting, Inc. opened their offices on the third evening for a reception at which they presented related research and software development products.
