Design of LTS Coil Used for the Combined Device of SMES-SFCL

The paper presented the whole procedure of the LTS coil design that was to be used in the combined device SMES-SFCL. Usually as long as the current do not exceed its critical current of the superconducting tape, SMES coil is safe. However in the combined device the short circuit current would flow through the coil, which inevitably caused additional problems, therefore it needed to be designed deliberately. The paper focused on the coil design to satisfy the SFCL requirement. The optimization of the coil size with the limitation of designated capacity and power was realized by Isight at first, including the inner radius, outer radius and height. The short circuit current in the coil was simulated by Matlab then, and its maximum was exported to ANSYS to analyse the stress distribution of the coil by the electricity-magnetic-structure coupling model. The simulation results showed that the LTS coil was safe from both the electrical and mechanical point of views
