the quantitative enzyme immunoassay method using Ovucheck kits (Cambridge Veterinary Sciences). P4 concentrations of 5 ng/ml or less were considered negative, while concentrations of 5 5 ng/ml or more were considered positive. Examinations made from November 16 to July 15 related to inseminations during the moderate climatic period (ambient minimum and maximum temperatures in the range of 60 to 18°C and 150 to 28°C, respectively) and showed conception rates during the current lactation for 1215 cows in the negative P4 group and for 3298 cows in the positive P4 group of 48-5 and 76 per cent, respectively (P<0.000001). Examinations made from July 16 to November 15 related to inseminations during the hot climatic period (minimum and maximum ambient temperature 22° and 32°C) showed conception rates during the recent lactation for 379 cows in the negative P4 group and for 518 cows in the positive P4 group of 37-5 and 62 5 per cent, respectively (P<0.00001) (Table 1). In the positive P4 group, the concentration was related to the chance of conception during the recent lactation (Table 2). In the moderate climatic period for 442, 1147 and 1709 cows with P4 concentrations of 6 to 10, II to 20 and 21+ ng/ml, respectively, the conception rates during the current lactation were 67-9, 75.3 and 78-6 per cent, respectively (P<0 00001). In the hot period for 81, 206 and 231 cows with P4 concentrations of 6 to 10, 11 to 20 and 21+ ng/ml, respectively, the conception rates were 46-9, 60 7 and 69-6 per cent, respectively (P<0.001) (Table 2). Analysis by logistical regression correctly predicted the association between P4 level and conception in 59-4 per cent for the moderate period and in 52-2 per cent for the hot period. The percentage of cows inseminated four times or more in the course of the lactation during the moderate period for the negative and positive P4 groups was 41 2 and 23.1 per cent, respectively, (P<0.00001). The corresponding values during the hot period were 472 and 292 per cent, respectively (P<0.081) (Table 3). Cows in the negative P4 group which underwent luteolysis after the first breeding (as indicated by milk progesterone concentrations of 5 ng/ml or less) and had shown no signs of oestrus by the time of P4 examinations 20 to 23 days after the first insemination had a low chance of conceiving to subsequent inseminations and
