Myogenic cells in development and growth of fish.

Abstract Development and growth of fish muscle differ from that in mammals and birds. In fish, the formation of different muscle fibre types is spatially, as well as temporally, separated, and in many species, formation of new muscle fibres continues well into adult life. These features, and the strong influence of environmental changes on muscle development and differentiation make fish muscle, in addition to a subject of economical interest (fish farming), an interesting system for comparative studies on the role of myogenic cells in muscle development and growth.
