CVD Diamond for Optical Windows

The development of high-power infrared (IR) lasers and the evolution of airborne IR-sensor systems have raised the demand for DR. windows capable of withstanding high thermal and mechanical loads. In this context, diamond windows prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques have attracted considerable interest. The advent of CVD techniques for the manufacturing of large-area diamond windows has opened up the opportunity for a variety of new optical applications. These applications make use of the exceptional optical, thermal and mechanical properties of diamond, such as optical transparency from the UV to the far infrared, high thermal conductivity, resistance to thermal shock and high durability with respect to waterdrop impact and solid-particle abrasion. They benefit from the progress achieved on the synthesis of high-quality CVD-diamond wafers with properties approaching those of perfect type IIa natural diamond crystals.
