Determination of Optimum Position of Outriggers of Trimaran Regarding Minimum Wave Pattern Resistance

The purpose of this work is to determine the amplitude functions and wave pattern resistance of a trimaran from known amplitude functions of component hulls for predicting the optimum position of outriggers regarding minimum wave pattern resistance. In order to obtain the trimaran wave pattern, the method of calculation is based on the linear superposition of experimental wave pattern data of component hulls. Component hulls are Wigley hulls with parabolic waterlines. Experimentally determined values of the wave pattern of component hulls would enable, for different relative positions of component hulls, the determination of the Froude number range where favourable wave interference occurs. The presented way of wave pattern resistance determination, along with the necessary experimental confirmation, would have the advantage of obtaining the trimaran wave pattern resistance for a wide range of hull separations and staggers avoiding complicated and expensive measurements for each relative position of component hulls.
