Abstract A pattern of stripes has been observed by several methods in the corneal stroma of rat, guinea-pig, rabbit and man. The stripes run throughout the stromal thickness, normal to the direction of the collagen fibres. The spatial period is 14–17 μm in man, and somewhat smaller in the other species.
