Asphalt properties and mix design procedures report from the Brisbane City Council trial

A section of road was established as a trial to review if there was a relationship between laboratory wheel track testing and rutting in-service. Five different asphalt surfacings were placed each about 25 metres long. Due to problems associated with the site, three of the five sections had to be eliminated from the trial leaving only the two poorer performing surfacings. No relationship between laboratory wheel tracking and field rutting was able to be established with such a paucity of data. The field compaction process was carefully monitored and related to laboratory compaction. It was found that gyratory compaction was correlated with field compaction but Marshall and slab compaction was not. The data from the trial supported the Austroads mix design compaction levels. (a)
