Effect of Slip Plow Design on Draft Forces and Soil Loosening

ABSTRACT THE location of the shank, the angle of the slip plate, and the width of the slip plate are the main design parameters of slip plows. The optimum distance for shank placement is about 350 mm behind the cutting edge of the slip plow. The optimum angle for the slip plate is found in the range of 20 deg to 30 deg. The draft increased linearly with increasing width of the slip plate. Greater volumes of soil are loosened by slip plows than by subsoilers, but the efficiency— the volume of soil loosened per unit of draft—is greater with subsoilers.
