Fine‐Needle Aspiration Cytology of Pancreatic Schwannoma

Dear Editor: Schwannoma is a benign tumor of the peripheral nerve sheath that commonly occurs in the head and neck and extremities. Pancreatic schwannoma is a rare tumor that can present with a diagnostic challenge in fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. Less than 50 cases have been reported in the English literature and only one case report has described its findings on FNA. Patients with pancreatic schwannoma can present with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. The biological behavior of pancreatic schwannoma is unclear but it has been described to have cystic changes, calcification, hemorrhage, and rare malignant transformation. We present a case of pancreatic schwannoma that was diagnosed by FNA and describe its cytomorphological features on ThinPrepVR (TP) and cell block (CB) sections.
