A new Quick-Stop Device for Milling and Grinding

A new quick-stop device is described, which has the ability to present for cutting tests a rigid, plane surface from within which a small coupon of workpiece material can be rapidly accelerated normal to the plane and away from the cutting element. The mechanism operates by the use of the double-shear-pin concept, previously applied to conventional turning quick-stop devices. The device has been applied to milling and grinding tests which are reported in this paper. For grinding cut depths of 0.01 mm, separation has been achieved in less than 5 microseconds, and within 10 microseconds milling separation distances of 0.05 mm have been obtained.
