Application of Ant Colony Algorithms to Optimization Design of Type-C Damped Filter

Since type-C damped filter has the characteristics of restraining low order harmonic, high pass and almost zero-power loss in fundamental wave, optimization is done in order to solve the problems of harmonic and var compensation in high-voltage direct current transmission system. Based on the ant colony algorithms and MATLAB, simulation optimization concerning Type-C damped filter is made on the basis of minimal cost. On the prerequisite of minimal investment, the simulation result shows that the new design can effectively eliminate most of harmonic current of 5, 7, 11, 13 order respectively. At the same time, the Type-C damped filter can also provide var compensation. It is proved that the ant colony algorithms are practical in optimization design in electric power industry and the optimization effect is prior to genetic algorithms.
