Industrial application of current signature analysis to diagnose faults in 3-phase squirrel cage induction motors

This paper focuses on the industrial application of current signature analysis (CSA) to diagnose faults in 3-phase induction motor drives. The diagnostic strategy is presented and variables that influence the diagnosis are discussed. Actual industrial case histories are presented that verify CSA can detect rotor related problems such as broken rotor bars. The combination of CSA to detect rotor related problems and partial discharge (PD) monitoring to assess the health of high voltage stator windings can therefore provide a very powerful monitoring strategy for induction motor drives.
