Malignant Tumours of Nasopharynx in Delhi

THE malignant tumours of nasopharynx and oropharynx occur mostly in Orientals, though sporadically they may occur in Western countries. They also present problems different from those in advanced countries, because the patients seek medical advice very late. This may be due to their illiteracy, sentiments and superstitious beliefs. A comprehensive study of these tumours in India has not been made since the last publication of Das et al. (1954) and Sirsat (1954). The present paper deals with the review of 48 cases of primary malignant tumours of nasopharynx admitted in Safdarjang Hospital from Delhi and its neighbouring provinces, Punjab, U.P. and Rajasthan. Geographically, Delhi is situated at a longitude of 77° and a latitude of 29 0 . The area is 5,735 sq. miles with a population of 2,700,000 and is at an altitude of 709 feet above sea level, with an average rainfall of 27 inches. This is not a very industrial area, but, industries are expanding rapidly.
