Rules for locating the sources of capacitor switching disturbances

In our previous work, we demonstrated the principle that various types of transient disturbance sources in a network may be approximately located by examining the changes in the instantaneous power and energy flows caused by the disturbance (see Proc. 8/sup th/ Internat. Conf. on Harmonics and Quality of Power, Athens, Greece, p.693-9, 1998). The directions of the power and energy flows indicate whether a disturbance source is located in front of or behind a recording device. This information can be useful for locating trouble spots in the network or in assigning liability for power quality "pollution". In this work, we focus on capacitor switching disturbances, presenting calculations that will further justify the basic ideas presented in the previous paper. Furthermore, additional rules for locating the disturbance sources based on the characteristics of the disturbance power and energy are presented. These rules are tested on actual recorded capacitor switching disturbance events.
