Bearing capacity of surface footings by finite elements

Abstract A finite element elasto-viscoplastic solution is presented for a general bearing capacity problem of strip and circular surface footings. A Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion has been assumed for the soil behaviour. Both associated and non-associated flow rules have been incorporated and the footing behaviour is studied in detail. Contributing bearing capacity factors of the conventional solution have been assessed and superposition errors are indicated. Results have been compared with existing solutions and presented graphically.
