8 Gbit/s transmission over 30 km of optical fibre

We demonstrate, for the first time, 8 Gbit/s digital transmission over single-mode optical fibre. A 30 km link was achieved using a directly modulated 1.31 ?m multilongitudinal-mode laser and an avalanche photodiode receiver.
