Brain ageing and dementia: what makes the difference?

The boundaries between non-pathological brain ageing and the dementias are unclear and contentious. Neuropathological examination can detect occasional individuals in whom the microscopic features typical of late-onset Alzheimer's disease are present yet a clinical history of dementia is absent.
