The Interaction between Prefix and Root: The Case of Maha- in Malagasy

The prefix maha- in Malagasy, a Western Austronesian language spoken in Madagascar, has traditionally been considered as having two meanings: an abilitive meaning and a causative meaning (note that the word order in Malagasy is VOS): 1 (1) Abilitive: Mahaongotra ravina amin’ny tanana Rabe. maha-pull out root with DET hands Rabe ‘Rabe can pull out the roots with his hands.’ (2) Causative: Mahafmaritra an’i Soa Rabe. maha-happy ACC Soa Rabe ‘Rabe makes Soa happy.’
