KAP study on AIDS among men who have sex with men in Guangzhou, Guangdong province

Objective ①To get basic information on men who have sex with men (MSMs) in Guangzhou and their awareness of HIV/AIDS; ②to explore a set of approaches for communication with MSMs; ③to disclose the prevalence of HIV, HBV, HCV and T. pallidum among MSMs; ④to snapshot the prevalence of high risk behaviors and their determinants among the targets. Methods A face-to-face interview and the blood collection were applied to gather HIV/AIDS related KAP among the sampled subjects. Results The integrated awareness rate of HIV/AIDS knowledge was 76.03% among 121 subjects, and the prevalence of HIV, HBsAg and T. pallidum was 1.70%, 11.97%, and 11.11% respectively. The higher prevalence of risk behaviors was disclosed and about 19.8% of the subjects had homo-and hetero-sexual partner concurrently within 6 months before the interview with very low condom use rate during their casual sex contacts: the proportion of condom use during their latest anal intercourse and vaginal intercourse were 16.7% and 41.7% respectively. Conclusions Active surveillance project should be conducted among MSMs in order to monitoring the epidemic of HIV/AIDS/STDs. Safer sex involved behavior intervention programs should be actively carried out as well as strengthened health education programs to MSMs in order to control the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS.
