Implementation of an advisory speed algorithm in TRANSYT

Dynamic advisory speed signs which display speeds at which motorists can travel smoothly through downstream signalized intersections appear to offer benefits to both the national economy and the driver. Modifications to the traffic simulation program TRANSYT have enabled some of these benefits to be quantified on a typical urban road network. Provided that the greater proportion of motorists obey the signs it is shown that fuel consumption can be reduced by as much as 13% and the total number of stops by up to 38%.
