A parametric model of a 2-stroke engine for design and analysis

Abstract In this paper we demonstrate a procedure for designing a two-stroke engine with good scavenging properties. To achieve this, a method of surface design, referred to as the Partial Differential Equation (PDE) Method, is utilised to represent the critical elements of the internal geometry of the engine. To assess the scavenge flow inside the engine we run steady-state CFD calculations, from which a suitably chosen performance measure is calculated. We then demonstrate how we may improve the value of the scavenge performance measure by adjusting the design parameters associated with the engine geometry. A virtue of the method is that the geometric model for the two-stroke engine may be rapidly altered by changing the values of a small number of design parameters.
