Fatal road traffic crashes: comparisons by road user types and measures of exposure

Mobility practices are changing in favor of active transportation modes (walking and cycling), for different reasons: health benefits, environmental protection and economic crisis. Then, a better understanding of road traffic risk associated with road user types, taking into account the exposure, is needed. This paper assesses the exposure-based fatality rates of road traffic crashes in France. The fatality rates were defined as the ratio of the number of fatalities by the exposure data to road traffic. Fatality data were provided from the French national police data of road traffic casualties over the 2007-2008 period. The exposure data were provided from the latest national household travel survey (ENTD) conducted from April 2007 to April 2008 where the three following measures of mobility were used: (1) the time spent in travelling, (2) the distance travelled and (3) the number of trips undertaken. Annual fatality rates were assessed by sex, age and road user types, based on these three different measures of mobility.
