NPs in Japanese conversation

This paper is a discourse-pragmatic analysis of nominal phrases (NPs) that speakers of Japanese produce in informal dyadic conversational interaction. More specifically, it examines NPs in terms of their relations to 'intonation units' (Chafe 1987, 1993, 1994) as basic units of discourse production and information flow in spoken discourse. The present study addresses the following research questions:
