Life cycle impact assessment of coal-based methanol and natural gas-based methanol fuel

With life cycle assessment methodology, the environment impact in life cycle of Coal-Based M85(mixture of 85% methanol and 15% gasoline by volume) and Natural Gas-Based M85 are assessed and compared with conventional gasoline.Compared with conventional gasoline,Coal-Based M85 and Natural Gas-Based M85 can reduce the overall environmental impact value(OEIV) by 41.2% and 60.8%.Among the emissions, the VOC effects the environment mostly. The SO2 emission of Coal-Based M85 is higher than that of Natural Gas-Based M85,which leads to that the OEIV of Coal-Based M85 is more higher than Natural Gas-Based M85.The CO2 emission caused by CO shift conversion process of coal to methanol is 36% of the life cycle CO2 emission, which leads to that the life cycle greenhouse gases emissions of Coal-Based M85 is higher than that of gasoline and Natural Gas-Based M85.
