Folk Linguistic Perceptions and the Mapping of Dialect Boundaries

La constitution de cartes representant les frontieres linguistiques et les variations dialectales est generallement basee sur l'analyse des productions, des formes de dialectes. Dans cet article, l'A. montre l'interet d'une dialectologie populaire, qui prenne en compte les perceptions et attitudes des habitants vis-a-vis des variations linguistiques. Il presente une etude experimentale menee en Ohio, dans laquelle les perceptions populaires des frontieres de langues sont mises en relation avec les variations areales de la production de langage. Cette approche permet d'obtenir une image globale des communautes linguistiques, en elles-memes et dans leurs relations reciproques, et sera alors utile lors de la constitution des cartes linguistiques et pour les etudes sur la variation linguistique.
