World markets and prospects for advanced technical ceramics

Many of the markets for advanced technical ceramics continue to grow at rates exceeding that of the growth rate for the Gross Domestic Product in developed countries. This invited paper describes those product sectors included (and excluded) in the definition of technical ceramics, the size of the market sectors and their growth rates. The structure of both the mechanical (structural) and electronic ceramic markets are also detailed in terms of their size, the number and size of suppliers and the geographical spread of sales and production. Recent developments related to the ownership and policy of the major (and some minor) players in the world technical ceramics industry are summarised. Some companies have developed their expertise from ceramic component suppliers into vertically integrated companies manufacturing consumer and electronic products. The last decade of development has resulted in both spectacular successes and disappointments in the business opportunities and technical development of materials and products. With reference to specific examples, some of the factors affecting growth and success are highlighted. Predictions are made for those ceramic products likely to continue to enjoy above average growth rates and those countries and markets which are likely to lead forward the world market for advanced technical ceramics.
