Chemically Reacting Nonequilibrium Boundary Layers

Publisher Summary This chapter begins with the formulation of the governing equations and a brief discussion of the chemical kinetics. It follows with the various cases of nonequilibrium surface reactions assuming that the gas phase reaction is frozen. The nonequilibrium gas phase reaction will then be considered for surfaces either nonreacting or in equilibrium. The chemical reactions associated with the interaction of gases in motion and solid or liquid surfaces have interested engineers for ages. In the discussion of the chemically reacting boundary layers, this chapter presents analyses which are rather general in nature such that they may also be useful in studying other problems of nonequilibrium boundary layers than those considered herein. The emphasis has been placed on the basic behaviors and solutions of the boundary layer problems rather than on the particular engineering solutions. The chapter also explores about the experimental verification of the various analyses presented and describes an approximate treatment of simultaneous nonequilibrium surface and gas phase reactions.
