A Polarimetric Method for Multipath Phantom Target Suppression in UHF-RFID DoA Estimation Applications

In this work, a method for suppressing phantom targets in UHF-RFID DoA-estimation applications, caused by multipath signal propagation, is presented. The developed system utilizes a polarimetric approach to identifying the signal components coming directly from the RFID tag and those reflected off of an object. Both polarizations are considered for the DoA-estimation and by evaluating their phase and amplitude, phantom targets can be suppressed. A model for the received signals of a polarimetric DoA estimation system is derived and the characteristic phase and amplitude perturbations caused by different reflectors are analyzed. Based on this signal model simulations of two scenarios are presented. A hardware system overview of all necessary components for polarimetric UHF-RFID DoA estimation is given and first measurement results are shown.
