Study and simulation of on-board energy saving system with Electric Double Layer Capacitor of railway vehicle

This paper will propose a novel simulation method which can be used for urban rail transport based on different conventional and hybrid vehicles. The vehicle simulation program calculate the energy that vehicle requested from the substation; it takes into account the catenary, the characteristics of vehicle and substation distribution. Base on the simulation platform, we can study the control algorithms of the vehicle equipped with EDLC (Electric Double Layer Capacitor) and the energy consumption, catenary voltage and power flow between substation and EDLC during the vehicle traction and braking. By simulation, the design criteria and method of ESS with EDLC on-board of vehicle and the strategy of the power flow controller are proposed. Finaly, four different ESS sizes ranging from 1.35–3.125kwh will be compared on the energy saving under the same speed cycle but different loads.
