Distribution of digital TV signals over home power line networks

Nowadays the interest in transmitting video over home networks increases rapidly and services like video on demand are getting more attention. This article starts by providing an overview of the power line communication technology. Then the article presents the results of series practical measurements of the throughput, the response time, the transaction rate and the quality of different kinds of video streams, including real time video and kinds of video files, over the power line network at different locations in rooms of the research lab at the University of Leeds. Following that, a comparison between power line network and other networks serving as the backbone of home network to transmit video signals is given. Finally, a discussion of the feasibility of distributing digital TV signals over home power line networks and a brief description of market perspectives and promising applications are included.
