Just-noticeable-distortion-based fast coding unit size decision algorithm for high efficiency video coding

To reduce the computation complexity of high-efficiency video coding, a just-noticeable-distortion is introduced into fast video encoding and a fast coding unit size decision algorithm is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, the spatiotemporal factors of 8 × 8 blocks are computed using the spatiotemporal just-noticeable-distortion, and then a measure is built to represent the spatiotemporal homogeneity of a coding unit, and finally the candidate coding unit sizes are predicted. Compared with the state-of-the-art fast algorithm, experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve 23.60% coding time saving while maintaining a similar coding efficiency.
