In use and development since 1990, MicroMax is a knowledge-based system that helps human services workers in several U.S. states assess their clients’ potential eligibility for government assistance. It consolidates many complementary forms of information and functionality. This article summarizes MicroMax developments over the past seven years and reviews some of the kinds of knowledge the system may be said to codify. It includes practical perspectives on the knowledge engineering challenges encountered in developing and maintaining such a tool. The fill paper, available in the Working Notes oft&s conference, has the following sections: Project History and Statm This software was created for a joint project of Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Later sponsored by the Boston Department of Health and Hospitals and the Families USA Foundation, it is now owned by Community Catalyst, Inc. MicroMax is implemented in the CAPS Author environment.
