Embedded smart sensor device in construction site machinery

Abstract Automation and smart technologies provide an opportunity to improve the construction yard. The aim of this study is to confer autonomy and awareness to the machines used in construction sites, through the use of intelligent technologies. The system includes real-time recognition of individual activity by a smart plug equipped with a microcontroller with feedback on several profiles of power consumption. It also includes the collection of data in the cloud platform, consistent with local data processing. Three types of machinery among the most used in the construction sites, i.e. sawing machine, concrete mixer and hoist, have been considered. The smart sensor device recognizes individual overload for each machine type considered. Loading peaks at start up are handled by corrective actions differently from overload peaks during normal operation.
